How do you, as a dancer, fit into the creative process? How do you become that dancer, creators value working with?
This one-week course incorporates daily sessions with talented, creative professional dancers and choreographers alongside class and workshop sessions with EDC dancers focusing on contemporary dance technique. Teachers this week include Emily Amisano (Sydney Dance Company) and Dean Walsh!
The program will be of special interest to you as a tertiary dance student or independent dancer to understand more about your potential and role as a dancer in creating work.

A fantastic and inspirational way to begin your year!
During the week, you will:
- Take daily class – both ballet and contemporary;

Why should you participant in this program?
Often the difference between a dancer and an amazing dancer can be technique and facility; and also how the dancer responds and interacts with the creative process. Learn from the industry’s finest and get insider knowledge to build on what you already know and to ensure you come away feeling more confident with both your dancing and your future.
With only fifteen in the class, we hope to personalise what we can, and give you time with experts so you can find out what you don’t know.
What skill level do you need?
We have limited space so it is important the standard of the group is high to ensure we can progress the week’s program in an effective manner. Therefore, it is desirable you have achieved at least an RAD level of Advanced or equivalent.
The program is aimed at independent dancers entering the professional world, and tertiary dance graduates or soon-to-be-graduates with a high level of dance experience. We also welcome applications from students who feel they are at a sufficient level but who are not yet in tertiary or other training. It is desirable for participants to have completed a minimum of 5 years dance training.
Why is there an application process?
We find we create a better learning experience if all the participants are at a similar level. In addition, to achieve the goals of the week, the skill of the participants needs to be of a advanced level for this course. This is an intensive week that requires a level of fitness and skill to gain the most benefit.
For those still learning contemporary technique we recommend the intermediate course.
What will I get out of the course?
This will be the seventh Brisbane Contemporary Dance Intensive. The BCDI Advanced Program has traditionally had a theme or direction for the week. We often have return participants, so we try and keep it fresh and relevant. The format of the week is specifically designed to give you intense work-shopping time with the guest artists who are industry specialists. You will also really improve your confidence and facility in contemporary technique with the intensive training sessions with the EDC dancers. We have had overwhelming feedback from past participants that covers a range of positive outcomes:
• It will inspire you about contemporary dance
• It will challenge and extend your personal practice and skills
• It will bring you in contact with other aspiring dancers from around the country
