R&J

Watch Preview

Following her award-winning 2010 production Where The Heart Is, Natalie Weir creates R&J, three moving love stories inspired by the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet.

Set across three different eras, this new production reinforces the notion that love – no matter what age you are, or what age you are in – is eternal and its power everlasting.

R&J turns the classic story of Romeo and Juliet on its head, cutting to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable. Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew too well, does not always guarantee a fairytale ending.

With music composed by John Babbage and performed live on stage by prolific music ensemble Topology, R&J celebrates contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

R&J is highly creative and engaging contemporary dance that is presented in narrative form, which makes it easy for the students to unpack and understand.” (Secondary Dance Teacher, 2011)

Where the Heart is

Watch Preview

Please note – the Music from where the heart is is available on CD. (CDs and DVDs can be purchased separately, or as a package)

Whether a place of residence, refuge or comfort, home is where the heart is… a place that allows you to breathe and dream.

Set against the iconic remnants of an old ‘Queenslander’ style home, where the heart is is a multi-arts performance, deeply imbued with a sense of place and memories of home.

Based on the emotionally charged memories of a young man’s past, Expressions Dance Company’s six dancers perform alongside three gifted musicians in Natalie Weir’s first full-length work as Artistic Director of the company. With a breathtaking new score by John Rodgers, where the heart is features dynamic, physical and emotionally resonant music and dance.

The students had a great time and enjoyed the show (some even shed a few tears). I loved it. Natalie Weir’s artistry is truly inspirational.”  (Secondary Dance Teacher, 2010)

While Others Sleep

Watch Preview

Inventive contemporary dance and live jazz come together in a cabaret-seated session that brings hidden lives out from behind closed doors.

Expressions Dance Company teams up with the Judith Wright Centre and nationally acclaimed jazz band Misinterprotato to expose the seductive underbelly of Brisbane’s secret night life. Performed to evocative live jazz, three vignettes of intensely physical and highly emotional contemporary dance pull you deeper and deeper into the night.

We are keen to give them (our students) exposure to contemporary dance, in general, but are also particularly interested in finding works that support themes and content within the senior syllabus. ‘While Others Sleep’ was particularly good because it is immediately applicable to the work the students are doing in creating works that explore relationships, emotions and social issues.” Secondary Dance Teacher, 2010

Choreography Natalie Weir
Music Misinterprotato
Design Greg Clarke
Lighting Jason Glenwright
Duration 90 minutes
